Project Overview

I created a website prototype as a school project in the User Design Interface II course at Kennesaw State University. I was instructed to create a prompt to inform users about something new while incorporating twenty concepts of design laws and principles. This prototype presents as an representation of my ability to create an informational platform that effectively incorporates key design elements.

Goals

My goals for this project was to use laws and principles of user Interface design course to create effective design solutions, create an interface that allows users to have an intuitive and smooth navigation experience, and present content in a way that is easy for users to understand and memorize information.

The Process

This Process was split into 3 phases.

01

Written Proposal

Before creating the prototype, I was tasked with writing a project proposal of what the final project would be, and discussing the features that involve the twenty concepts of design laws and principles.

02

Project Development

After receiving approval of the written proposal, I began to create a prototype that would include all 20 concepts. This phase included my strategy of overcoming a challenge and the development of the prototype.

03

Reiteration

During the development phase, I received 3 rounds of critique and feedback from the instructor and peers. By diligently reflecting on the feedback given, I was able to make adjustments to finalizing the prototype.

The User Interface Design Concepts

This project incorporated 20 User Interface Design Concepts. Below are three examples.

Miller's Law

The Definition

Miller’s Law states that the number of objects an average person can hold in working memory is about seven, plus or minus two.

How the Concept is used

For my final project, I considered this principle by breaking up the alphabet into seven sections in the second learning task. This allows the learners to process each section easier.

Multimedia Principle

The Definition

The Multimedia Principle states that humans learn best from words and pictures than just words alone.

How The Concept is Used

For my final project, I adhered to this principle by including images and text to illustrate and enhance key points in learning cards.

Zeigarnik Effect

The Definition

The Zeigarnik Effect states that people are more compelled to remember uncompleted tasks rather than completed ones.

How The Concept Is Used

For my final project, I considered this principle by including a progress bar on the user’s dashboard. This allows users to see the overall progress, and what is completed and left to learn in the learning tasks.

The Deliverables

Takeaways

Throughout this project, I created a website prototype that used laws and principles to create effective design solutions, create an interface that allows users to have an intuitive and smooth navigation experience, and present content in a way that is easy for users to understand and memorize information. Developing GameON was significant to my learning experience as I got to explore design solutions from both promotional and tutorial interface styles.

In the beginning, I faced a challenge with my chosen topic ‘Learning the Alphabet Backward’ being too simple and not having a target audience. In the development phase, I overcame this challenge by creating a game within the online course of this informational prototype. Overall, I think this project was a great reminder to designers to not only focus on the visual appeal but the design solutions that helps users have a better experience.
